  • Agafay at Sunset and Night: Sunset Rides, Dinner and Stargazing

Agafay at Sunset and Night: Sunset Rides, Dinner and Stargazing

Ask anyone who has visited the Agafay desert what they remember most, and they will usually say the same thing: the sunset. As the sun drops behind the hills, the stony desert turns gold, orange and pink, the Atlas Mountains glow on the horizon, and the air becomes soft and quiet. Then night falls, the campfires are lit and the sky fills with stars. Here is how to make the most of Agafay at sunset and by night.

    Agafay sunset times by season

Month Approximate sunset Best pickup time
    December – January 17:45 – 18:15 15:00
    March – April 19:00 – 19:45 16:00
    June – July 20:30 – 20:45 17:30
    September – October 19:00 – 19:45 16:00

We adjust pickup times every season so that you are riding during golden hour. Read more in our best time to visit Agafay guide.

    Best sunset activities

    Sunset camel ride

The classic and most photogenic option: a slow caravan through the hills while the sky changes colour. From €22 per person for 1 hour. Read our camel ride tips.

    Sunset quad ride

For more adrenaline, ride your quad to a viewpoint and watch the sun go down over the desert. The sunset quad with dinner costs €77 per person. See quad biking in Agafay.

    Sunset buggy tour

Share a 2-seater buggy with your partner and chase the last light across the tracks. From €46 per person. See the Agafay buggy tour.

    Dinner under the stars

After sunset, guests gather in a Berber camp for a traditional Moroccan dinner: fresh bread, Moroccan salads, a tagine or couscous, seasonal fruit and mint tea. Then the musicians start playing, dancers join in and the evening ends with a spectacular fire show. The shared quad, camel and dinner show combo starts from €38 per person, and a romantic private dinner from €89. Discover the Agafay dinner show.

    Stargazing in Agafay

Because it is far from the lights of Marrakech, Agafay offers a beautiful night sky. A few tips:

    • Check the moon: the darkest skies are around the new moon. During a full moon, the desert is bright and beautiful, but you will see fewer stars.
    • Walk away from the camp lights: even 50 metres makes a big difference. Give your eyes 10 minutes to adapt.
    • Use an app: star map apps help you find planets, constellations and the Milky Way.
    • Best season: clear, dry nights are common from autumn to spring. Summer nights are warm and perfect for sitting outside for hours.

    Photo tips for sunset

    • Arrive early: the best light is often 20 minutes before the sun touches the horizon.
    • Shoot silhouettes of camels and riders against the sky.
    • Turn around: the light on the Atlas Mountains behind you can be even more beautiful.
    • Bring a power bank: you will take more photos than you think.

What to bring for the evening

Temperatures drop quickly after sunset, especially from November to March. Bring a warm jacket, long trousers, closed shoes and a scarf against the dust. Full list: what to wear in the Agafay desert.

  • Agafay Desert with Kids: A Family Guide from Marrakech

Agafay Desert with Kids: A Family Guide from Marrakech

Travelling to Marrakech with children? A trip to the Agafay desert with kids is one of the best family experiences in Morocco. It is close to the city, the activities are short and safe, and children love the camels, the wide open space and the fire show at night. Here is everything families need to know.

    Is Agafay good for children?

Yes. Agafay is only 40 minutes from Marrakech, so there is no long drive for little ones. Camps have shade, toilets, food and drinks, and many have a pool. Activities can be short (one hour) and adapted to the age of your children. Kids aged 4 to 11 pay half price on all our experiences.

    Best family activities in Agafay

    Camel ride

The number one favourite for kids. The ride is slow and gentle, and a cameleer leads the camel at all times. Young children can sit with an adult on the same camel. The 1-hour sunset ride starts from €22 per adult. See our camel rides in Agafay.

    Quad biking as a passenger

Drivers must be 16 or older, but younger children can ride as passengers behind a parent. Teenagers from 16 can drive their own quad. The guide adapts the pace to the group. More on our quad biking page.

    Buggy with mum or dad

A buggy has seats, seatbelts and a roll cage, so it is a comfortable and exciting option for older kids sitting next to a parent who drives (car licence required). Ask us about age limits when you book.

    Pool day

After a short camel or quad ride, enjoy lunch and an afternoon at the pool. It is the most relaxed day out for families, especially from May to September.

    Dinner show

Children love the music, the drums and the fire show after dinner. The menu is simple and tasty (bread, salads, tagine or couscous, fruit), and we can adapt it for picky eaters or allergies. Discover the Agafay dinner show.

    Age guide

    Activity Recommended age
Camel ride From about 4 years (younger with a parent)
Quad as passenger From about 6 years, with an adult driver

Tips for a family day in the desert

  • Things to Do in the Agafay Desert: 10 Best Activities (2026)

Things to Do in the Agafay Desert: 10 Best Activities (2026)

Only 40 minutes from Marrakech, the Agafay desert is the easiest way to experience the Moroccan desert without a long road trip. Its stony hills, golden light and views of the snowy Atlas Mountains make it perfect for a half-day adventure, a relaxing pool day or a magical evening under the stars. Here are the 10 best things to do in Agafay, with prices and tips to plan your visit.

    1. Quad biking across the desert hills

Quad biking is the most popular activity in Agafay. You ride an automatic quad behind a local guide on desert tracks, through small Berber villages and up to panoramic viewpoints. No experience or licence is needed, and drivers must be 16 or older. A 1-hour ride starts from €29 per person with hotel pickup. See all options on our quad biking in Agafay page.

    2. Drive a buggy

Want more power? A buggy is a 2-seater off-road car with a roll cage and seatbelts. It is more comfortable than a quad, perfect for couples, and great fun on the rocky tracks. The driver needs a car licence. Buggy tours start from €46 per person (2 people per buggy) for 1 hour, with 2-hour and full-day options. Details on our Agafay buggy tour page.

    3. Take a camel ride at sunset

A camel ride is the calm, iconic desert experience. Led by a Berber cameleer, your caravan crosses the hills as the sky turns gold and pink. It is suitable for children and older travellers, and a 1-hour sunset ride costs from €22. Read our 10 tips for a camel ride before you go.

    4. Enjoy a dinner show under the stars

After sunset, desert camps serve a traditional Moroccan dinner (salads, tagine or couscous, fruit and mint tea), followed by live music and a fire show around the campfire. Our shared quad, camel and dinner show combo starts from €38 per person. More on the Agafay dinner show.

    5. Spend a pool day in a desert camp

Swimming in a pool with a view of the desert and the Atlas Mountains is one of Agafay’s best surprises. Our pool days combine a quad or camel ride, a Moroccan lunch and an afternoon of rest by the water. It is the perfect break from the heat and noise of Marrakech, from €59 per person.

    6. Have a Moroccan lunch in a Berber tent

If you prefer daytime trips, choose a quad or camel ride followed by lunch in a Berber tent. It is shorter than a full day and leaves your evening free in Marrakech. The 1-hour quad and lunch combo starts from €45.

    7. Watch the sunset over the Atlas Mountains

Sunset is the most magical moment in Agafay. The hills change colour every few minutes and, in winter and spring, the snowy Atlas peaks glow pink on the horizon. Plan any activity in the late afternoon to enjoy it. Our guide to the best time to visit Agafay explains when the light is best in each season.

    8. Stargaze far from the city lights

Agafay has almost no light pollution. On a clear night after dinner, step away from the campfire and look up: you can see the Milky Way, planets and shooting stars, especially around the new moon.

    9. Book a romantic private dinner

For a proposal, an anniversary or a honeymoon, a private dinner in the desert is unforgettable: your own table, candles, lanterns and a set menu under the stars, from €89 per person.

    10. Combine everything in one day

Short on time? Combine quad biking, a camel ride and lunch or dinner in a single trip. Our full day with quad, camel, lunch and pool costs €82 per person, and the sunset quad, camel and dinner combo is our best-seller.

  • Camel Ride in Agafay: What to Expect and 10 Useful Tips

Camel Ride in Agafay: What to Expect and 10 Useful Tips

A camel ride is the most iconic way to discover the desert, and Agafay is one of the easiest places to try it from Marrakech. Slow, peaceful and suitable for almost everyone, it is a moment many travellers remember long after their trip.

How does a camel ride in Agafay work?

After your hotel pickup in Marrakech, you drive about 45 minutes to the desert. Your cameleer introduces you to your camel (in Morocco, these are actually dromedaries, with one hump), helps you get on, and leads the caravan through the hills. Rides usually last between 1 and 2 hours, with stops for photos and often a mint tea at the end.

Which camel experience should I choose?

10 tips for a great camel ride

    1. Hold on when the camel stands up

Camels stand up back legs first, so you will tip forward, then backward. Hold the handle firmly and lean back slightly. The same happens, in reverse, when the camel sits down.

    2. Wear long trousers

They prevent rubbing on the saddle and protect you from the sun.

    3. Choose closed, comfortable shoes

Sandals can slip off while mounting.

    4. Bring a scarf

Useful against wind, dust and sun. You can also wear it the traditional Berber way.

    5. Go at sunset

The light is magical, temperatures are pleasant and the photos are unforgettable.

    6. Keep your phone secured

Use a strap or a zipped pocket: a phone dropped from a camel is not fun.

    7. Relax and move with the camel

The rhythm is slow and swaying. Relax your back and follow the movement instead of resisting it.

    8. Bring a warm layer

From November to March, evenings get cold quickly after sunset.

    9. Tell us about children or mobility issues

Children love camel rides. Let us know their ages so we can plan, and tell us if anyone needs extra help getting on and off. Children aged 4 to 11 pay half price.

    10. Respect the animals

Do not feed the camels without asking the cameleer, and avoid sudden movements or loud noises near them.

Is a camel ride suitable for everyone?

Most people can enjoy a camel ride, including children and older travellers. It may not be recommended for pregnant women or people with serious back problems. If you are unsure, ask us before booking: a short sunset ride or a calm oasis ride may be a better alternative.

Packing for the Agafay desert is simple once you know what to expect: sun during the day, dust on the tracks and cool evenings. Here is our practical list, by activity and by season.

    The essentials (all year round)

    • Sunglasses: the light is strong, even in winter.
    • Sunscreen and lip balm.
    • A hat or cap for daytime activities.

    Camel riding

Long, comfortable trousers prevent rubbing on the saddle. Choose shoes that stay on your feet, and keep your phone in a zipped pocket. See our camel ride tips.

    Dinner under the stars

Desert camps are relaxed: smart-casual clothes are perfect. Bring a warm layer, as evenings in the desert are much cooler than in Marrakech, especially from November to March.

    Pool day pass

Swimsuit, towel if not provided, sandals and a cover-up for lunch.

    What to pack by season

    Spring and autumn

Light clothes for the day, a fleece or light jacket for sunset and dinner.

    Summer

Light, breathable and loose clothes in light colours, a wide hat and plenty of water. Prefer sunset or morning activities. Our best time to visit guide explains why.

    Winter

Days can be pleasant, but evenings are cold. Bring a warm jacket, a hat, gloves and a scarf if you stay for sunset or dinner.

  • Best Time to Visit the Agafay Desert: Month-by-Month Guide

Best Time to Visit the Agafay Desert: Month-by-Month Guide

The Agafay desert can be visited all year round, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons. Here is what to expect month by month, and how to choose the best moment for your trip.

    Quick answer

The best months to visit Agafay are March to May and September to November: warm, sunny days and pleasant evenings. Winter is beautiful and quiet but cold at night, and summer is very hot in the middle of the day.

Spring (March to May): the ideal season

Spring is the favourite season for many travellers. Days are warm without being too hot, the light is soft and the High Atlas often still has snow on its peaks, which makes the views even more beautiful. Every activity is comfortable: quad biking, camel rides, buggies and long dinners outside.

Tip: Easter and the May holidays are busy. Book a few days in advance, especially for sunset tours.

Summer (June to August): go early or late

Summer in the Marrakech region is hot, with afternoon temperatures that often go above 35°C and can reach 40°C or more. The desert stays beautiful, but you should plan your activities wisely:

    • Choose sunset experiences, like a sunset quad or camel ride followed by dinner.
    • Or go early in the morning.
    • A day pass with a pool is a great way to enjoy the desert while staying cool.
    • Drink plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun.

Autumn (September to November): golden light

Autumn is the second best season. The heat of summer fades, the sky is clear and the sunsets are spectacular. September can still be warm in the afternoon, while November evenings start to feel fresh. It is a great time for every activity.

Winter (December to February): sunny days, cold nights

Winter days in Agafay are often sunny and mild, perfect for quad biking and camel rides in the afternoon. The snowy Atlas Mountains create stunning panoramas. However, temperatures drop sharply after sunset and nights can be close to freezing.

    • Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves for evening activities.
    • Luxury camps usually provide thick blankets and sometimes heating.
    • Christmas and New Year are very busy: book early.

What is the best time of day?

For most visitors, the late afternoon and sunset are the magic hours in Agafay. The golden light transforms the hills, temperatures are pleasant and you can continue with dinner under the stars. Mornings are also lovely, quieter and cooler in summer.

    What about Ramadan?

Tours and desert camps generally operate normally during Ramadan. The atmosphere in the evening can be very special. Just check opening times when you book.

    Summary table

    Season Weather Best for
Spring Warm days, mild evenings Everything
Summer Very hot afternoons Sunset tours, pool day pass
Autumn Warm days, fresh evenings Everything, great sunsets
Winter Mild days, cold nights Afternoon quad and camel rides

  • Agafay vs Merzouga: Which Moroccan Desert Is Right for You?

Agafay vs Merzouga: Which Moroccan Desert Is Right for You?

Many travellers to Marrakech want to see the desert, and two names keep coming up: Agafay and Merzouga. They offer very different experiences. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

    Distance from Marrakech

Agafay is about 40 km from Marrakech, around 45 minutes by car. You can visit it in half a day and sleep in your riad the same night.

Merzouga, at the edge of the Sahara, is more than 500 km from Marrakech. The drive takes around 9 to 10 hours each way, crossing the High Atlas. Most tours last 3 days and 2 nights.

    Landscapes

Agafay is a stone desert: rolling hills of golden earth, wide horizons and views of the snowy High Atlas in winter and spring. There are no tall sand dunes.

Merzouga is home to the Erg Chebbi dunes, huge orange sand dunes that can reach over 100 metres high. It is the classic “Sahara” picture.

    Activities

    Activity Agafay Merzouga
Quad biking Yes, on stony tracks and hills Yes, on sand dunes
Camel ride Yes, 1 to 3 hours Yes, often to an overnight camp
    Buggy Yes Yes
Desert dinner & show Yes, very popular Yes, in camps
    Sandboarding No Yes

    Time and budget

Agafay fits into a short city break. You can do a sunset quad and camel ride with dinner and be back in Marrakech the same evening. Prices start from around €35 per person with hotel pickup.

Merzouga requires at least 3 days, which means more time on the road, accommodation and meals. It is a bigger budget and a bigger adventure.

So which one should you choose?

    Choose Agafay if:

    • You have only 1 to 4 days in Marrakech.
    • You travel with children or elderly relatives and want to avoid long drives.
    • You want desert activities, a beautiful sunset and dinner under the stars without a road trip.
    • You love views of the Atlas Mountains.

    Choose Merzouga if:

    • You dream of high sand dunes and the “real” Sahara.
    • You have at least 3 days and enjoy road trips.
    • You want to discover the Atlas, the Dades and Todra gorges on the way.

    Can I do both?

Of course. Many travellers start with Agafay during their stay in Marrakech, then continue to Merzouga if they have more time. Agafay is a perfect introduction to the desert.

  • Agafay Desert Guide: How to Visit from Marrakech (2026)

Agafay Desert Guide: How to Visit from Marrakech (2026)

Just 40 minutes from the medina of Marrakech, the Agafay desert feels like another planet: golden stony hills, silent valleys and, on clear days, the snowy peaks of the High Atlas on the horizon. It has become the easiest way to experience the Moroccan desert without the long drive to the Sahara. This guide covers everything you need to plan your visit.

    Where is the Agafay desert?

Agafay is a rocky desert plateau located about 35 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, between the city and the foothills of the High Atlas. The drive takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on where you start. Nearby you will find small Berber villages and wide open views of the mountains.

Unlike the Sahara, Agafay is not a sea of tall sand dunes. It is a stone desert (a “hamada”) made of soft, rolling hills of beige and ochre earth. The landscape is wide open, which makes it perfect for quad biking, buggy driving, camel treks and watching spectacular sunsets.

How to get to Agafay from Marrakech

    • With a tour (easiest): most activities include hotel pickup and drop-off. At Agafay Journeys, every experience includes free pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech.
    • By taxi or private driver: possible, but you need to arrange the return trip in advance, as there are no taxis waiting in the desert.
    • By rental car: the roads are paved most of the way, but the last kilometres to the camps are dirt tracks. Check with your camp before driving.

The best things to do in Agafay

    1. Quad biking

The most popular activity. Automatic quads make it easy for beginners, and the tracks wind through hills with views of the Atlas. Read our complete quad biking guide to know what to expect.

    2. Camel ride at sunset

A peaceful way to discover the desert. A camel trek at golden hour, followed by mint tea, is a classic. See our 10 tips for a camel ride in Agafay.

    3. Buggy driving

For more adrenaline, a 2-seater buggy lets you drive yourself across the desert tracks with a guide leading the way.

    4. Dinner under the stars

Many camps serve traditional Moroccan dinners under Berber tents, often with live Gnawa music and a fire show. Combining a sunset activity with dinner is the best way to end your day.

    5. A day by the pool

Several desert camps have swimming pools facing the Atlas. A camel or quad ride followed by lunch and an afternoon by the pool is a perfect way to enjoy Agafay, especially in summer.

    How much does it cost?

Prices depend on the activity and what is included. As a guide, here are our current prices with hotel pickup included:

    • Sunset camel ride (1 hour): from €22 per person
    • Quad biking (1 hour): from €29 per person
    • Quad, camel & dinner show in a shared group: from €38 per person
    • Camel ride & oasis half-day: from €35 per person
    • Traditional lunch & 1h quad ride: from €45 per person

    • Agafay quad bike half-day: from €69 per person
    • Buggy tour (1 hour): from €46 per person (2 people per buggy)
    • Sunset quad, camel & dinner combo: from €89 per person

Children aged 4 to 11 pay half price on our experiences.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summer days are very hot, so choose sunrise or sunset activities. Winter days are sunny and mild, but evenings are cold. Our month-by-month guide explains everything.

    Agafay or Merzouga?

If you only have a day or two in Marrakech, Agafay is the perfect choice. If you dream of high sand dunes and have at least 3 days, Merzouga is worth the trip. We compare both in Agafay vs Merzouga.

    Practical tips

    • Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes, and bring a scarf for the dust. See our packing list.

Quad Biking in the Agafay Desert: Prices, Tips & What to Expect

Riding a quad bike across the golden hills of the Agafay desert is one of the most exciting things to do near Marrakech. No experience is needed, the landscapes are stunning and the whole adventure fits easily into half a day. Here is everything you need to know before you go.

How does a quad tour in Agafay work?

A typical quad biking experience looks like this:

    1. Hotel pickup in Marrakech and a 45-minute drive to the desert.
    2. Welcome and briefing at the quad base: you receive a helmet, goggles and a scarf, and the guide explains how to drive.
    3. A short practice on flat ground to get comfortable with the quad.
    4. The ride, following your guide on desert tracks, with photo stops on viewpoints facing the Atlas Mountains.
    5. A mint tea break, often with a Berber family, before heading back to Marrakech.

The quads used in Agafay are usually automatic, so you only need to accelerate and brake. It is easy to learn, even if you have never driven one.

How much does quad biking in Agafay cost?

Prices vary with the duration and what is included (meal, camel ride, dinner). Here are our prices, hotel pickup included:

    Who can drive a quad?

Most tours do not require a driving licence for quads, as you ride on private tracks with a guide. Drivers usually need to be at least 16 years old, and younger children can ride as passengers with an adult. Always check the conditions when you book, and tell us if you are a beginner so we can adapt the pace.

    Quad or buggy?

A quad is ridden like a motorbike and gives a great feeling of freedom. A buggy is a small 2-seater off-road car: more comfortable, closed and perfect for couples, but drivers usually need a driving licence. If you hesitate, choose the quad for the experience and the buggy for comfort and power.

    What should I wear?

    • Long trousers and closed shoes (no sandals).
    • A light jacket or long sleeves to protect from sun and dust.
    • Sunglasses, even if goggles are provided.
    • A scarf or buff for your face (often provided).
    • A warm layer for sunset rides, especially from November to March.

    Morning, afternoon or sunset?

In summer, mornings and sunset are the most comfortable times to ride. The rest of the year, afternoon and sunset rides are the most popular for the beautiful light. The sunset quad combined with a camel ride and dinner is our best seller: you get the adventure, the golden hour and a relaxed evening under the stars.

    Safety tips

    • Always follow your guide and keep a safe distance from the quad in front.
    • Drive at your own pace: nobody will push you to go faster.
    • Keep both hands on the handlebars and your feet on the footrests.
    • Drink water before and after the ride.
    • Tell the guide if you feel uncomfortable at any time.
